We finish off our player previews with the second and final walk-on on the Rhody roster. Shane Plunkett comes to the Rams from New York by way of Long Island Lutheran High School. Plunkett is a shooting guard with a decent outside shot, and he did see some brief action in the Coast Guard game, going 0-1 from the field in just two minutes of play. He had the fewest minutes of any Ram in that game. Let’s check out some other notes on the freshman:
Plunkett was a multi-sport athlete at Long Island Lutheran, playing both basketball and baseball.
- He was the captain of the hoops team his senior year, leading the Crusaders to a 23-6 record.
- Long Island Lutheran was ranked as the #8 team in New York State, and #210 nationally last season with Plunkett as captain.
- The Crusaders won back-to-back Class A State Championships in 2010-11 and 2011-12.
- Wore jersey number 15 in high school, but has doubled it to #30 at Rhody (15 is not taken by any Ram this season).
We don’t expect to see much of Plunkett on the court this season, but he did have success as both a player and a team leader in high school, and he is only a freshman. He should use this season as an opportunity to learn from the current Ram veterans and work on his game. We saw what happened with walk-on Anthony Malhoit his senior season; if Plunkett can stick with the team and learn from the Hurleys, Jim Carr, and the rest of the coaching staff, he could be a contributor to this Ram roster down the road.
