We’ve reached out to the Atlantic-10 to inform them that they’ve spelled Xavier Munford’s name wrong.
In all seriousness, this one could have gone either way… we just wanted it to go the other way. No disrespect to Williams, though, who certainly had a monster week. Here’s the official release from the A-10:
The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Richmond junior Derrick Williams its men’s basketball Player of the Week and Xavier freshman Semaj Christon its Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday for games played during the week of Nov. 26 – Dec. 2.
Williams registered double-doubles in Richmond wins over William & Mary and Wake Forest last week. The Harlem, N.Y. native scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a two-point win over Wake Forest. He was 6-of-8 (.750) from the field and 13-of-15 (.867) at the line for the Spiders. A forward, Williams scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds earlier in the week against the Tribe. He was 5-of-7 (.714) from the field and a nearly perfect 6-of-7 (.857) at the line against William & Mary. He shot and made a single 3-pointer in each game and he also had two assists in each game.
Christon, who earned the award for the second straight week, had a tremendous outing in his first true road game – a 63-57 win at Purdue. The guard had a career-high 25 points on 8-of-12 from the field and 8-of-8 from the free throw line to go with four assists, four rebounds and three steals. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Christon and was the only player on either team to play all 40 minutes. He is leading Xavier with 16.0 points and 6.2 assists per game as a freshman.
As for Munford, his week saw him average 24.5 points per game on 56% shooting. He also averaged 50% from three point range and 3.5 assists per game in contests versus George Mason and Vermont. Both Munford and Mike Aaman were named to the A-10’s Weekly Honor Roll.
