Checking in With Rhode Island Rams Recruiting Commit E.C. Matthews

You didn’t think we’d leave out E.C., did you?

Following yesterday’s update on Hassan Martin’s senior season thus far, we figured it’s only fair to also check in on the other 2013 Rhode Island Rams commit. E.C. Matthews committed to Rhody the same weekend that Martin did, and with a top-100 (88 to be specific) ESPN recruit rating, Matthews appears to be the top prize for Rhody. But is he shining as much as Martin is in his final year of college hoops?

As a refresher, E.C. plays for the Romulus (Michigan) Eagles. The Eagles currently sit at 2-1 on the young season in the Western Wayne – Blue division. Unlike Martin, Matthews is likely not the best player on his team. That honor belongs to point guard and Missouri commit Wes Clark. That hasn’t prevented Matthews from tearing it up, though. E.C. has scored 15 or more points in each of the Eagles’ three games, and is averaging 17.3 points per game.

The availability of high school stats is limited, at best. But here’s what we do know: In his first game of the season, a Romulus win, Matthews scored 15 points, including a 7-8 performance from the free-throw line. The free-throw accuracy continued as he dropped in 8-9 free throws in game number two, an Eagles loss. E.C. finished up that one with 16 points. And he’s coming off a 21 point effort over the weekend in another win. Free throw stats for the most recent contest are not readily available, but we can tell you that he was shooting an insane 88% from the line coming into it, and if he can carry that into Rhody, it would certainly be welcome.

With Wes Clark starting at PG for the Eagles, Matthews is playing the two-guard position primarily, despite being recruited by Rhody to play the point. His ball-handling skills are excellent, but the lack of playing time this season at this point is a bit concerning. He is 6’4″, after all, so Romulus is likely using his size to their advantage at the shooting guard spot. But we’ve said it before – regardless of what position he plays, Matthews is a special talent. His ability to adeptly drive and score around the rim cannot be understated. This is a huge get for the Rams.

How excited are you guys to see E.C. in a Rhody uni next season? Let us know in the comments!
