The Atlantic 10 announced their Inaugural Men’s Basketball Legends 2013 class yesterday, honoring one former men’s basketball student-athlete or coach from each A-10 school. Each honoree was nominated by his respective University, and the Atlantic 10 will recognize the inductees on March 16 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. prior to the 2013 Men’s Basketball Championship semifinals.
Steve Chubin has been selected to represent the Rhode Island Rams in the 2013 class. Chubin, a 1966 graduate of URI, is the all-time Rhody leader in points scored with 2,154. The 6’2″, 200-pound guard was selected with the 3rd pick in the 3rd round (23rd overall) in the 1966 NBA Draft, part of a class that included Dave Bing, who was taken with the second overall pick. Chubin never played in the NBA however, electing to play the 1966-67 season overseas in Italy as part of the Simmenthal Company (Milan) team. He returned to the states for the 1967-68 season and joined the Anaheim Amigos of the newly-founded American Basketball Association (ABA). In his first season, Chubin was arguably the Amigos’ best player. He led the team with 18.2 points-per-game, and also ranked third in the league in assists (4.7) and tenth in free throw percentage (81.0 percent). Chubin played for five ABA teams until his retirement following the 1969-70 season. Chube is obviously a fine pick to represent Rhody as part of this ceremony, and with the Rams’ deep history, look for many more URI greats to be part of this in the coming years.
