The 2013-14 Rhody recruiting class just keeps looking better and better. The 2013 McDonald’s All American Nominees list was released on Thursday, and University of Rhody Island signee E.C. Matthews was among those nominated. Matthews, out of Romulus High School in Romulus, MI, is one of just 11 players nominated from the state of Michigan. Also getting a nod was his teammate and Missouri commit Wesley Clark. Matthews will become the first McDonald’s All American to play for the Rams since Scott Hazelton in 2004-05.
But it gets better… and somewhat stranger. Ifeanyi Onyekaba was also nominated out of the state of Virginia, which is a bit curious considering he probably shouldn’t be eligible – Onyekaba is currently enrolled at URI and no longer a high school student. Either way, it’s great to see these two Rhody recruits honored at one of the highest levels, and next year should be a fun one. For what it’s worth, no students from the state of Rhode Island were nominated for either the boys or girls team. You can check out the full list of nominees here. The list will be narrowed to the top 24 players and will be announced next month. Those top 24 will play in the actual McDonald’s All-American games, which will take place on April 3rd in Chicago.
