The Rhode Island Rams received a signed commitment from quarterback Luke Casey today as part of National Signing Day. The signing was first announced via URI football’s official Twitter account.
Casey will head to Kingston from Baltimore, Maryland, where he’s currently a senior at Atholton High School. And everything we see indicates that he can be a real star for Rhody. Check this out: Casey led Athloton to a 10-2 record this season, good for 16th best in the state. He threw for 1,512 yards and 15 touchdowns in his senior year, while throwing just four interceptions. And simply put, he’s built like a quarterback. At 6’4″, 190, he could maybe use to add a few pounds, but that height is certainly a strength, and unlike anything the Rams have right now (Bob Bentsen is 6’1″).
Casey received a good amount of interest from several good schools. His only other offer was from Marist, but Boston College, Duke, North Carolina, and William & Mary all showed interest. With that kind of talent, could we see an open competition for QB before this season gets underway? It will be something to keep an eye on.
Casey is described as a pocket passer from most who have seen him play, so let’s hope the URI offensive line can give him enough time to sit back and pick defenses apart. If they do, he could be a real key for Rhody in the coming seasons.
