Rhode Island Baseball: Rams Head to Ole Miss for Weekend Series

Following a tough series against the number 9 Florida State Seminoles, the 0-3 Rhode Island Rams get set to take on yet another nationally ranked team this afternoon. Rhody heads to Oxford-University Stadium to take on the Ole Miss Rebels for a three game weekend series, beginning tonight at 5:00 PM EST. The Rebels are currently the 18th ranked team in the country according to the NCBWA, so things will not get any easier for URI. But the Rams had their chances against the Seminoles so hopefully they can finally break through for their first win of the season.

Ole Miss currently sits at 4-0 and are coming off a big 15-2 drubbing of the UT-Martin Skyhawks. Last weekend the Rebels swept the TCU Horned Frogs in a couple of close games, a 1-0 contest followed by a pair of 5-2 victories. Mississippi is led on offense by catcher Stuart Turner, who is hitting .364 with a home run and 5 RBI in the early going. Outfielder Auston Bousfield leads the team with a .400 average, but all of his hits are singles so far. Bobby Wahl will be on the hill today for Ole Miss, and he’s coming off an excellent performance against TCU that earned him SEC Player of the Week honors. Wahl went 6 1/3 innings against the Horned Frogs, allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out eight. The Rebels as a whole have a very tough pitching staff, so Rhody’s offense is going to have to work counts and maybe play a little small ball if they’re going to score runs.

Following today’s 5:00 start, the Rams and Rebels will square off at 2:00 PM on Saturday before finishing things off with a 2:30 PM Sunday matinee. If the URI pitching staff can cut down on their walks, the Rams could certainly use a confidence booster as they wade through an incredibly difficult schedule in the early going. Getting their first win will do just that.
