The Rhode Island Rams have their first win out of the way… can they make it two in a row later today? Rhody will take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this morning, with the first pitch set to come at 11:00. The Irish are the #22 team in the country according to the latest Baseball America poll, which means URI is back to facing a ranked opponent. That one-game break was just a tease as the Rams will have their work cut out for them once again.
Notre Dame comes into today’s action at 7-1 overall and winners of their last five. The Irish toughed out a pair of wins as part of a double-header yesterday: a 9-4 drubbing of UMass and a 3-2 victory over Tennessee in 12 innings. The 21 innings that the Irish endured yesterday will hopefully play to Rhody’s advantage. ND has also defeated Tulane, Ohio State, and Florida Gulf Coast on the young season, with their only loss coming to Mercer.
The Irish offense is led by Ryan Bull, who carries an impressive .424 average on the young season. The sophomore has tallied a double, a home run and three RBI through the first eight games. Ace Adam Norton anchors the pitching staff, starting the season at 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA. The senior has also struck out nine batters in his 12 innings of work.
If the Rams were pressing at the plate in hopes of getting their first win, they can now relax. And a winning streak coupled with a victory over a ranked opponent will only give them more confidence. Let’s see if Rhody can get into a groove as they try to inch their way back towards a respectable record.
