Despite Xavier Munford’s amazing 30-point effort on Saturday, he was not named Atlantic 10′s Player of the Week this morning. Instead, the honor went to St. Louis Billikens’ forward Dwayne Evans, who turned in not one but two solid games for the week beginning February 25th. And even though he is second in the conference in scoring (and has been for some time), Munford still has yet to be honored with the weekly award.
It’s hard to dispute Evans as a worthy choice for this week, however. In two games against St. Joseph’s and George Washington, the junior averaged 21.5 points and 12 rebounds per game, posting a double-double each time. He also shot 48 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free throw line combined, and added seven steals and four blocks total.
What likely hurt Munford was that despite his point total, he failed to tally a rebound or an assist against Temple. It also didn’t help that Rhody was on the losing end in their only game this week, while St. Louis recorded a pair of victories. The A-10 Player of the Week has yet to be rewarded to a member of the Rams, and it will only be rewarded one more time this season. If a URI player fails to capture it, it’ll just something else for Rhody fans to add to next year’s to-do list.
