The Rhode Island Rams have been one of the hotter baseball teams in New England as of late, but today they’ll take on a local team with a winning streak of their own. Rhody will take on the Northeastern Huskies at Friedman Diamond in Boston this afternoon in their first and only meeting of the season. URI will try to bounce back after losing two of their last three, dropping them to 11-14 on the season.
NU comes into today’s action with a 15-11 record and winners of five straight. The Huskies suffered a heart-wrenching sweep at the hands of William and Mary the weekend before Easter, losing three straight games by a 1-0 margin. But since then, they’ve been on fire. Northeastern steamrolled Central Connecticut State last Monday before topping the Boston College Eagles on Tuesday. Then then swept James Madison over the weekend, running their winning streak to five and their home record to 5-3.
The Huskies are led on offense by outfielder Connor Lyons. The junior holds a .327 average through the first 26 games, and has added 7 doubles, 12 RBI, and 10 stolen bases. On the mound, NU’s starters have been quite impressive. Senior Kevin Ferguson anchors the staff with a 4-2 record and a 2.01 ERA. The lefty has also struck out 41 batters in just seven starts.
Today’s game gets underway shortly, with the first pitch coming at 3:00 p.m. It’s part of just a one-game road trip for the Rams, as they’ll head home to take on the aforementioned Central Connecticut State tomorrow afternoon. Let’s hope they’ll be coming off a solid win against a good Northeastern squad.
