The Rhode Island Rams baseball team is back in action this weekend for another three-game series in Atlantic 10 play. This time, URI heads to the Bronx to take on the Fordham Rams, with the series getting underway this evening at 7:00 p.m. Rhody currently sits at 3-3 in the A-10, which is good for eighth place in the conference. Following their loss to Bryant on Wednesday, the Rams are now 15-17 on the season.
Fordham comes into tonight’s action with a 12-20 record, including 1-5 in A-10 play. In other words, it’s just Fordham being Fordham. They’ve also stumbled as of late, losing 13 of their last 15 contests, including an 8-2 loss to Army on Wednesday. The other Rams’ lone conference win came on the road against St. Joseph’s, but they have yet to play an Atlantic 10 foe at home. Fordham does hold an impressive 10-5 record within the confines of Houlihan Park, their home facility.
If you want to know how many Fordham players are batting over .300, the correct answer is zero. Matthew Cianci (no relation to Buddy, that we know of) leads the other Rams with a .281 batting average on the year. There’s not really much to be scared of on this offense; a team, Fordham is batting a paltry .224 and averaging less than four runs scored per game.
The other Rams have won most of their games with their pitching. Freshman Joseph Serrapica leads the way on the staff with a 2-1 record and a 2.60 ERA. He also has a complete-game shutout under his belt, as well as a .240 batting average-against. As a team, Fordham has a decent 4.92 ERA, but they do have 34 wild pitches on the season, which tends to be… not so good.
Besides tonight’s 7:00 p.m. start, tomorrow’s game gets underway at 4:00 p.m. with Sunday’s finale coming at noon. This series looks to be a great chance for Rhody to improve their record and move up in the A-10 standings. Because, you know… Fordham.
