Rhody fans, if you aren’t paying attention to the URI Rams baseball team, now would be a good time to start. Rhode Island won their eight and ninth straight games yesterday afternoon following a sweep of the Hartford Hawks on the road. Can any team stop Rhody right now? The nine consecutive victories have moved the Rams to 24-17 overall, including 11-11 on the road. Lest we forget, they started the season 0-10 on the road, so to say the turnaround has been spectacular would be an understatement.
URI took the first game of the double dip by the score of 7-1 thanks to an outstanding pitching performance from junior Milan Mantle. The righty went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five. A two-run triple from DH Shane O’Connell in the second inning got the Rams on the board and it was smooth sailing from there. Mike LeBel chipped in with a pair of RBI singles to add some insurance, and Lou Distasio closed things out for his first save of the season.
Game two saw another solid pitching performance, this time from Tyler Bowditch. It also saw Rhody effectively put the game away with a huge offensive output in the third inning. With the score tied 1-1, the Rams exploded for seven runs in the top of the third en route to an 8-2 win. URI hit for the cycle in the inning, driving in runs with each hit. A two run homer from Jeff Roy got things started. Pat Fortunato then tacked on an RBI double, Connor Foreman ripped an RBI triple, and O’Connell stayed hot with an RBI single. Overall, the Rams outhit Hartford 25-9 in the two games.
So, yeah. Rhody is playing some damn good baseball right now. They’ll be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they look to improve on their 9-3 record in Atlantic 10 play. The Rams will head to Cincinnati to open up a three-game weekend set against conference foes Xavier. We’ll have much more on the Musketeers coming up tomorrow.
