The Rhode Island Rams baseball team is getting hot at the right time as they begin a huge three-game series this afternoon in Cincinnati. Rhody opens up a big weekend set with the Xavier Musketeers this afternoon, and the outcome could have big implications on the Atlantic 10 standings. It’s also an important showdown in terms of seeding for the upcoming A-10 Tournament. Yes, despite the fact that it seems like baseball season is just starting, the conference tournament begins less than a month from now (May 22).
If you haven’t checked out the A-10 standings yet, you can find them here. As you can see, it’s pretty crowded at the top, with the top eight teams all within four games of one another. In that mix sits Xavier, who is just one game behind the Rams, making this series all that more important. The Musketeers have lost three in a row however, and their overall record is only slightly above .500. The Rams may have a slight edge, despite the series being played in Ohio.
Xavier comes into today’s action as an exceptional offensive team. They have nine players hitting above .300 on the season, and hold a jaw-dropping .306 team batting average. Senior Patrick Paligraf anchors the Musketeers lineup with a .327 batting average, a pair of home runs and a team-leading 31 RBI. X averages over six runs scored per game.
This series could shake out to be quite a slug-fest, as Xavier’s weakness appears to be their pitching staff. If Bradstreet and Furney can keep the Musketeers bats at bay, the Rams will have a great shot at winning yet another A-10 series. First pitch from today’s game is at 3:00 p.m., with Saturday’s game getting underway at 1:00 and Sunday’s finale at noon.
