Rhode Island Rams baseball fans were glued to the MLB Draft last weekend, hoping to see URI ace Sean Furney get selected. But the weekend came and went, and the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year never came off the board. It was mind-boggling to say the least, and we vented some of our frustrations earlier this week. Well forget about all that now. Because Furney has been signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
So all’s well that ends well, right? Just based on this season alone, Furney deserves a shot with an MLB team. And now he’ll get one. From GoRhody.com:
“I was definitely a little bummed to not hear my name called in the draft this past weekend,” Furney said. “But then again, I haven’t exactly taken the most traditional path where baseball is concerned – so this is probably a fitting way for me to start my career.”
Technically, Furney has become first Rhody Ram from this year’s draft class to sign on with a team. According to the Pirates official website, Jeff Roy has not yet signed with Pittsburgh, but he is expected to officially lock in a contract within the next few days.
