As the Rhode Island Rams look forward to their 2014 recruiting class, some bigger and better names have started to surface. But this bit of recruiting news will have most fans of a certain age nodding their heads. That’s because one of Rhody’s biggest targets of the 2014 class is Bonzie Colson, Jr. If it sounds familiar, it’s because he is the son of the former URI star with the same name.
Colson is on the short side for a big man, checking in at 6’7″, 220 pounds. But don’t let the size fool you – he’s the full package of points, rebounds, and blocked shots. Plus, he’s local; Colson is about to enter his senior season at St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, RI. Besides playing for the Saints, he’s also playing AAU ball for BABC. And check some of these numbers out: he averaged 16.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game for St. Andrew’s during his junior year. Those numbers were good enough to earn him Rhode Island Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors.
The worry for Rhody fans is that Colson could be blowing up, recruitment-wise. He is a 4-star player per ESPN, and the interest is pouring in. Here’s the latest:
Pittsburgh and Temple are now showing interest in 2014 BABC (MA) forward Bonzie Colson.

In addition, Bonzie, Jr. has also received offers from Florida State, Notre Dame, Seton Hall, and Iowa State (amongst others). But come on, big name schools don’t seem to faze Dan Hurley and Co. If anyone can get Colson to Kingston, it’s this staff.
