The excitement for the 2013 college football season is building, and Rhody’s season is only 52 days away. With that, our countdown to Opening Day is on. We’re going through the schedule game-by-game to try and figure out if the Rams can improve on their winless season from a year ago. Our Fordham preview is in the books, so it’s on to URI’s home opener against the Stony Brook Seawolves.
2012 Record: 10-3 (5-1 in the Big South Conference)
Key Losses: QB Kyle Essington, RB Miguel Maysonet, WR Kevin Norell
Key Returners: RB Marcus Coker, LB Jawara Dudley, CB Davonte Anderson
Player to Watch: DL Kevin Hauter
The Rams are most likely going to have their hands full with Stony Brook’s defense, and Hauter is the centerpiece of their D-line. He tallied a team-high five sacks last season as a sophomore, and added seven tackles for losses on the year. The 6’2″, 260-pounder had some break-out numbers last year, and he’s only going to get better with still two collegiate seasons left. Rhody’s O-line is going to have to do work in the trenches if they’re going to keep Bob Bentsen upright.
Prediction: Stony Brook 31 – Rhode Island 7
Yes, the Seawolves lost their starting quarterback, their top rusher, and their #1 receiver from last season. But Iowa transfer Marcus Coker is ready to step in and carry the load at RB, and Stony Brook’s stellar defense is still stacked. The Rams are going to struggle to put points on the board in this one, and the Seawolves should come away with the victory at Meade Stadium.
