Rhode Island Football 2013 Schedule Preview: Richmond Spiders

On October 19, the Rhode Island Rams will welcome the Richmond Spiders to Meade Stadium for a Family Day match-up. The game will mark Rhody’s second-straight against an opponent that finished last season amongst the FCS Top 25, with the Spiders closing last year at #18. Can the Rams shock some people and pick up a win against a very tough CAA opponent? Let’s break it down.

The Skinny:

2012 Record: 8-3 (6-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association)
Key Losses: QB John Laub, RB Kendall Gaskins, CB Doug Howell
Key Returners: QB Michael Strauss, WR Ben Edwards, DE Kerry Wynn

Player to Watch: DE Kerry Wynn

Richmond is returning a good amount of their offensive stars, but their defense is what carried them a year ago. And 6’5″, 270-pound Kerry Wynn was (quite literally) a big part of it. The defensive end is coming off a stellar junior season in which he tallied 45 tackles, four-and-a-half sacks, and two fumble recoveries. Wynn is not only large, but he’s quick off the line; his long arms give him the ability to not only put pressure on quarterbacks but to disrupt passes as well. Rhody’s offensive line is big and experienced, but will they be ready for the beast known as Kerry Wynn?

Prediction: Richmond 27 – Rhode Island 10

The Spiders stomped Rhody 39-0 in Virginia last season, but URI should at least be able to make this one interesting. The Rams certainly should be an improved squad, but Richmond’s defense is still going to be too much for Rhode Island. The Spiders should win this one going away.
