It’s after Labor Day, and you know what that means… Rhody hoops is right around the corner. While Ram fans await the release of the 2013-14 schedule, let’s get to cracking on our annual player previews. It also gives us a moment to stop obsessing about who may or may not become Rhody’s next star shooting guard and focus on their current star shooting guard. So here are a few notes on Xavier Munford, the only senior on URI’s roster.
- Led Rhode Island with 17.4 points-per-game last season, which was good for third in the Atlantic 10 in scoring. Munford is also the top returning scorer in the conference.
- Despite all that, he was not named to any of the 2012-13 All-Conference teams. X was recognized as part of the USBWA All-District team.
- Scored a career-high 33 points on November 25 as part of a 78-72 double-OT win at Auburn. And that’s not even the half of it. Munford buried EIGHT three-pointers (also a career-high), including an insanely clutch long-ball at the end of the first overtime to keep the game going. It was Rhode Island’s first victory of the 2012-13 season.
- Reached the thirty-point plateau once more on March 2. X scored 30 points exactly in a 76-70 loss at Temple.
With the additions of Biruta, Reischel, Matthews, and others, Munford won’t be counted on to carry the offense as much this season. And that’s a good thing. Even with that, X has the potential to have a very special season in his final year in Kingston.
