As our previews wind down, we’re now onto our first of three Rhode Island freshman on the 2013-14 roster. While E.C. Matthews and Hassan Martin get all the headlines, Matthew Butler seems to be the forgotten signee from the most recent recruiting class. But make no mistake about it – he has the ability to help the Rams in several different areas this season. We already gave you a full breakdown of Butler when he signed with Rhody, but here are a few more notes.
- Struggled through an ankle injury in his senior season at Memphis East High School, but was still able to post 14.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in his final year with the Mustangs.
- Butler’s big season was came in his junior year. He shot lights out in the Tennessee State Championship game (8-11 and 4-6 from three), which generated interest from schools like Georgetown, Memphis, and Ole Miss.
- Just how prolific of a shooter is Butler? Here’s what Dan Hurley had to say…
Matthew [Butler] had a very impressive individual skill workout. I think he made 43 out of 50 threes – @dhurley15

It’s certainly been a while since the Rams had a player who could come off the bench and just bury threes… perhaps not since Nikola Malesevic’s freshman season. That figures to be Butler’s role for now – if he comes as advertised he’ll be able to give Rhody a boost in several games this year.
