As we preview our final freshman on the Rhode Island Rams roster, we feel compelled to use the phrase “last, but not least”. But that’s probably an understatement. E.C. Matthews is one of the highest rated recruits in recent memory for Rhody fans, which means the expectations are equally high. Not to worry, though – you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t think Matthews is fully capable of exceeding those expectations. Here are a few more notes on Elbert Clark Matthews.
- Matthews was an absolute star at Romulus High School, averaging 17.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game in his senior season.
- Ranked as a Top-100 prospect for the class of 2013 on nearly every recruiting list. Scout, ESPN, and Rivals all listed Matthews as a four-star player.
- Specifically chose the University of Rhode Island because Dan Hurley offered Matthews the opportunity to play point guard. We’ll see how exclusively he plays the 1, but right now it’s hard to think he’ll see any other spot on the floor.
Just one tip: keep reminding yourself that Matthews is a freshman. It’s unlikely that he’s going to come in and be Derrick Rose right away. That said, it’s hard not to be excited about what this kid can bring to the program. Let’s start the season already!
