Rhode Island Basketball 2013-14 Schedule Preview: New Hampshire Wildcats

Are you all UNH’d out yet? The Rhode Island men’s basketball team will have a chance to exact revenge of behalf of the football team when they face off against the New Hampshire Wildcats just before Christmas. It kind of feels like the Rams play UNH every year, right? That’s what we thought too, but this will be the first meeting between the two clubs since the 2010-11 season. Rhody won that match-up 64-52 at the Ryan Center.

The Skinny:

2012-13 Record: 9-20 (5-11 in the America East Conference)
Key Losses: F Ferg Myrick, G Chandler Rhoads, C Chris Matagrano
Key Returners: F Patrick Konan, C Chris Pelcher, G Scott Morris

Player to Watch: C Chris Pelcher

What’s that cliché… you can’t teach size? Well Pelcher has plenty of that going for him. The 6’10″, 240 pound senior averaged 9.1 points and 6.3 rebounds a year ago, the latter of which led the team. Perhaps his best game of the season was a 16-point, 12-board effort against UConn in a game that UNH lost 61-53. Pelcher also tallied three blocked shots in that game, contributing to his 1.4 per game average.

Prediction: Rhode Island 74 – New Hampshire 58

The Wildcats lost two of their three double-digits scorers from a year ago, so the Rams should have no trouble dispatching their New England foes at home. It’s also worth noting that URI holds a staggering 89-17 edge in the all-time series between the two clubs. Expect the tradition to continue.
