The 2013-14 Rhode Island Rams basketball season got underway this past Thursday night with Rhody Madness, officially kicking things off for what should be an exciting year. And the event itself was pretty exciting too. In case you missed it (or if you just want to relive the awesomeness), here’s what went down:
- The dunk contest. Really, there are no words to describe how unbelievably awesome this was. Check out some pictures of it here, as well as the video below.
Hassan Martin is an absolute beast. A friendly reminder that he is still only 17 years old. Insane.
Also of note: All of Gilvydas Biruta’s dunks contain a 2Pac song as the soundtrack. Biruta says he learned English by listening to 2Pac.
- Jordan Hare was not present at the event. Before there’s a collective freak-out, see below.

Hare is not injured, and Kevin McNamara reports that he was in Michigan taking care of a personal matter.
- There hasn’t been much buzz on the recruiting front, but the Rams are quietly doing work. Check it out:
Matt Cimino, Jarvis Garrett, Crew Ainge, Saul Phiri, Tomas Murphy & others were reportedly at Rhody Madness last night

For what it’s worth, Crew Ainge is the son of Danny Ainge, the current President of Basketball Operations for the Boston Celtics.
In case you’re not counting down the seconds, Rhody’s first exhibition game is a week from this Friday, with Opening Night coming two weeks from this Friday.
