Rhode Island Basketball: Mike Aaman Victim of Alleged Off-Campus Assault, Out Indefinitely

Well this sucks. According to a statement from the University of Rhode Island athletic department, Mike Aaman was the victim of an alleged off-campus assault and will be sidelined indefinitely.

The statement from URI reads, in part, “Mike Aaman will not play Sunday and will be out indefinitely, pending further appointments, testing, and evaluations… We are aware of the situation and will not comment on any pending investigation.”

Bill Koch of the South County Independent has more details.

Koch also had this on the South County Independent website:

At approximately 3:45 a.m., Narragansett Police responded to South County Hospital in Wakefield, where Aaman had received a CAT scan, and had fresh swelling and bruising to his left eye, which he could not open, according to a police report.

Aaman told police he heard a friend was having “issues” with some men at a house party in Narragansett, and he found a ride to the residence to pick his friend up. When he arrived, he allegedly observed a “group of unknown males who did not appear to be college students” harassing his friend. Aaman told police he attempted to separate his friend from the group, and in the process was punched twice in his head and knocked to the ground, where the men allegedly continued to punch and kick him until Aaman was dragged away.

Aaman told police there were four alleged attackers, but he did not know the address or vicinity of the house party. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains open.

Aaman has missed Rhody’s last six games following the removal of his appendix in Arizona, but he was expected to return this Sunday. Now this setback leaves the Rams in the same boat, with only Ifeanyi Onyekaba, Gilvydas Biruta, and Hassan Martin available in the URI front court.

Obviously, it’s doubtful that we’ll hear any more about the alleged assault as there is an ongoing police investigation. But if there’s any news on Mike Aaman’s status going forward, we’ll be sure to pass it along when it becomes available.
