The Rhode Island Rams turned in one of their better games of the season this afternoon as they downed the Dayton Flyers 88-76 at the Ryan Center. Rhody tied their fourth-best overall shooting performance in program history (62.5 percent from the field) as this one was never really in doubt. The win vaults URI past Dayton in the A-10 standings and into a three-way tie for eighth at 2-4. Rhode Island also sits at 11-10 overall on the season.
If you were expecting a slow start this afternoon… it didn’t happen. The Rams ran out to an early 22-12 advantage just 8:24 into the contest and it was smooth sailing from there. URI led by as many as 15 in the first half before a small run from the Flyers got them to within eight at the break.
Forget the score for a second and check out some of the first half numbers: Rhody shot 64 percent in the first 20 minutes and racked up nine assists on 18 made field goals. Xavier Munford (18) and Gilvydas Biruta (11) were already in double figures heading into the tunnel and Rhode Island was halfway into their best 40 minutes of the season.
The second half was pretty much the same song. Dayton got to within four early on but URI ratcheted the offense up once again. The Rams led by 16 with 10 minutes to play and they held off a late push from the Flyers to pick up a big home win.
Munford and Biruta finished with 27 and 15 points respectively, and they were joined in double-figures by E.C. Matthews (20) and T.J. Buchanan (11). Matthews also chipped in with 10 rebounds as the freshman picked up his first career double-double.
It was all gravy as the Ryan Center today and there’s not really much to nitpick from this one. We’ll see if we can find anything when we take a deeper dive coming up tomorrow.
