There’s no time to dwell on Tuesday’s loss – it’s on to the next one for the Rhode Island Rams. Rhody heads to CSU Ballpark this afternoon to take on the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, in what could be a very winnable game. Let’s check it out.
2013 Record: 22-34 (11-13 in the Big South Conference)
Key Losses: C Drew Woodall, P Ryan Gunther, P Kevin Buran
Key Returners: SS Alex Tomasovich, OF Bobby Ison, P Tory Schroff
Hey, look at that – a losing record in 2013. This will be the first time this season that URI will square off against a team that didn’t have a winning record last season. But don’t get too excited about it. CSU comes into today’s game with a 6-2 mark so for in 2014. The Bucs are coming off a 10-4 loss to Wofford earlier this week, however.
The Rams will once again be dealing with a staff day this afternoon, but CSU’s pitching staff has been tough in the early part of this season. They’re entering today’s game with a 3.25 team ERA, and they have a good amount of fresh arms in their bullpen. The URI offense couldn’t do much Tuesday against the bullpen staff of the Citadel – let’s hope they can put together more of a sustained attack this afternoon.
The Buccaneers are returning most of their big bats from a season ago, and there’s certainly a few that can do some damage. But if there’s one to watch out for, it’s junior Bobby Ison. The outfielder had a monster 2013, and he’s already building a similar campaign this year. Ison is hitting .448 on the young season with a home run and four RBI. Also of note – he has yet to strike out in 36 plate appearances, and was one of the toughest hitters in the country to fan last season.
Can the Rams halt their five-game losing streak today? Or will the tough stretch continue? First pitch from Charleston, South Carolina is set for 3:00 p.m.
