So that was about as good as it gets. The Rhode Island Rams blew the Richmond Spiders out of the Ryan Center this afternoon with a 66-43 victory in a game that was never close. Like ever. Rhody dominated UR from the opening tip and never looked back as this one was pretty well in hand at halftime. It was a record-breaking afternoon on several levels, culminating in Xavier Munford’s 1,000th career point in a URI uniform. All in all, a great afternoon. The Rams now improve to 13-17 on the season and 4-11 in Atlantic 10 play.
OK, so maybe Rhode Island didn’t literally control the game from the opening tip considering Rhody was down 9-6 after the first 4:14. But that didn’t last for long. The Rams put together an insane 24-2 (which included both a 14-0 run and a 10-0 run) to jump on top 30-11 with 2:41 to play in the half. The Spiders could have got back on the bus right there as it was a 31-15 ballgame at the half.
URI didn’t stop there, however. They continued to pour it on as the Rams opened the second half on a 6-0 run, and it was smooth sailing from there. The only drama left was: would Xavier Munford reach the 1,000 point mark? He came into this afternoon’s action needing just 15 to reach the milestone. Munford was at 13 points on the day when this happened, with 8:08 to play in the second half:
With that, Munford became the fastest player in URI history to reach the 1K mark as he achieved the milestone in just 59 games. X finished the game with 15 points on the nose, one of four Rams in double-figures.
There is literally nothing to complain about after this one. But we’ll have plenty more awesomeness to discuss tomorrow.
