Rhode Island Basketball: 2013-14 Report Card - Xavier Munford

Points Per Game: 16.9 (1st on the team)
Field Goal Percentage: 40.2 (8th)
Rebounds Per Game: 4.0 (4th)
Assists Per Game: 2.4 (3rd)

The Rhode Island Rams will return nearly their entire team next season, with one very notable exception. Xavier Munford’s two-year career at URI is over, but it wasn’t without fanfare. X finished up as one of the most prolific scorers in Rhody history as he reached the 1,000-point milestone faster than any other player in school history. Munford hit the mark in just 59 games as he hit the 1K mark on March 1st against Richmond.

We gave X a B+ at the halfway mark of the season, but that was probably a little unfair in hindsight. Sure, his shooting percentage was never ideal, but he was a scorer… in every sense of the word. Munford could connect from everyone on the court. And when he went got hot, it was usually bad news for the opposition. His scoring average, shooting percentage, and assists all grew in the second half of the season, and he was a big part of URI’s strong finish.

So can the Rams replace his scoring? Maybe. But it won’t be easy. Either way, the wins are coming for Rhody, and soon. It’s just a shame that X won’t be around to see them.
