The Rhode Island Rams baseball team was slated to play a three-game series against La Salle this weekend, but mother nature had other plans. Rhody got in just Friday’s game against the Explorers before rain swept through Philadelphia, washing out both the Saturday and the Sunday game. According to the official release from URI, there are no make-up dates scheduled yet for the two rain outs.
As for the game that actually was played, it didn’t go Rhode Island’s way. The Rhody offense was silenced once again as they fell to La Salle 3-2. Despite the final score, things started off quite well for the Rams. They were able to strike almost immediately, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first against La Salle starter Shane Hollman. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Derek Gardella and Connor Foreman accounted for the scoring as URI was off and running.
The hot start didn’t last, however, as Rhody was held scoreless for the next eight innings. Meanwhile, the Explorers chipped away against URI starter Ty Sterner. They were able to tie things up in the second inning with an RBI single from Kevin Conroy and a run-scoring ground out by Ryan Welling. Justin Korenblatt delivered another RBI single in the fifth off Brendan Doonan to put La Salle on top, and that was the end of the scoring for both sides.
The fifth inning didn’t just mark the end of the scoring – it was the end of the Rhody base runners. The La Salle bullpen pitched four perfect innings to close things out as the Rams couldn’t even mount a threat. The one bright spot from this one was URI’s defense. They turned in an error-free game, their first of the season.
Rhode Island is back in action tomorrow when they welcome Northeastern to The Beck. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m., weather permitting.
