Rhode Island Basketball Recruiting: Signing Period Gets Underway Today

Get ready, Rhody fans – it’s time to start getting excited about the 2014-15 Rhode Island basketball season. Sure, it’s only mid-April, but next year’s roster could start taking shape as early as today with the start of the Regular Signing Period. The signing period for basketball players enrolling for the 2014-15 season begins today and runs through May 21. So who will the Rams ink? First, here’s a look at how many spots are up for grabs:

Current Scholarships (10)
Gilvydas Biruta
T.J. Buchanan
Matthew Butler
Jordan Hare *
Hassan Martin
E.C. Matthews
Biggie Minnis
Ifeanyi Onyekaba
Jarelle Reischel
Earl Watson **

* Sat out all of 2013-14 due to personal reasons, but still under scholarship.
** JuCo transfer eligible for the start of 2014-15.

Losses From 2013-14 (3)
Mike Aaman *
Xavier Munford **
Mike Powell ***

* URI playing career ended due to injury. Will remain with team under scholarship, but scholarship will not count towards team total of 13.
** Graduated
*** Transferred

This leaves Dan Hurley and Co. with three open scholarships, which they can begin filling today. One is expected to go to point guard Jarvis Garrett, who verbally committed to the Rams back on February 25. In fact, Garrett confirmed yesterday that he will sign his LOI as early as today, so Rhody realistically only has two scholarships open.

So who else is there? There’s not a lot of public news, which granted doesn’t mean a whole lot. But here’s a list of a few players who could start buzzing over the next few days:

High School Seniors

PF Rokas Gustys
6’9″, 245
Oak Hill Academy (VA)

PG Kedrick Flomo
6’2″, 175
North Forsyth High School (NC)

SG Ayinde Sprewell
6’3″, 195
Daytona State College (FL)

PG Malik Albert
6’2″, 165
Mott Community College (MI)

Yeah, so that list isn’t too long. But don’t put it past this coaching staff to pull someone out of their hat whose name we have yet to hear. So strap in – things could start getting fun as early as today.
