The irrational fear that a big-time BCS school may swoop in and steal Jared Terrell from both URI and BC may not be so irrational after all. Welcome to the party, Pitt. According to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, the Panthers were the latest school to get involved with Terrell today.

Uh oh. Rhody has been burned in the Terrell sweepstakes before, last time by Oklahoma State. Is it happening again? Last we heard, it was down to just Rhode Island and Boston College, with pundits listing the Rams as a slight favorite to land the highly regarded shooting guard. Terrell has been holding off on making a decision, however. Could he be waiting for a bigger-name school to come calling? Is Pitt that school?
Or is this just complete overreaction? As anyone who follows recruiting knows, an offer means pretty much nothing, and it doesn’t necessarily indicate mutual interest. There’s no better example then JuCo Ayinde Sprewell, who said his decision was down to URI and Western Kentucky. Turns out Rhody was never even recruiting him.
There’s also this, from a Pitt basketball reporter for Rivals.com:
Although Pitt just offered Jared Terrell, it sounds like he is going to stay closer to home.

In other words, this very well could be much ado about nothing. There’s certainly a little cause for concern, based solely on URI’s history with Terrell. But full-blown panic? Maybe pump the brakes on that one for now. If Terrell and Pitt line up a visit, then it’s probably safe to sound the alarm. Otherwise, fans should remain in wait-and-see mode.
