Rhode Island Basketball: Looking Ahead to the 2014-15 Season

Sure, the Rhode Island Rams still have one scholarship open for the 2014-15 season, which may or may not be used. But the “will they or won’t they” game still won’t change two things: 1. Most, if not all of the key players for next season are already on the URI roster. And 2. Fans are unbelievably excited for next year.

And with good reason. Rhody had a tremendous recruiting cycle this spring, and they’ve also welcomed Jordan Hare back into the fold. Yes, Xavier Munford has departed, but the Rams have added both talent and depth in hopes of replacing him. Here’s what we know about the scholarship players on the roster so far.

Seniors
F Gilvydas Biruta
G T.J. Buchanan

Juniors
F Jordan Hare*
G Biggie Minnis
F Ifeanyi Onyekaba*
F Jarelle Reischel
F Earl Watson

Sophomores

G Matthew Butler
F Hassan Martin
G E.C. Matthews

Freshmen

G Jarvis Garrett
G Jared Terrell

* = may be eligible for additional year

The key word there is balance, both in terms of positional breakdown and experience. Dan Hurley and Co. have also expanded URI’s depth at nearly every position. And while some may be hesitant to elevate expectations, especially considering the Rams didn’t exactly prove the pundits right last year, you’d have to be pretty crazy to not expect another step forward this coming year. How big of a step forward remains to be seen.
