Former Rhode Island Ram Ty Sterner has officially signed a contract with the Cincinnati Reds, effectively ending his time with URI. Sterner had until the July 18th deadline to sign a professional contract, but he only took about 48 hours to ink a deal and take his baseball career to the next level.
Now Sterner will head to… yikes, Montana. The lefty has been assigned to the Billings Mustangs, Cincinnati’s Rookie league affiliate. The Mustangs are part of the Pioneer League, which is composed of eight teams in Montana, Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. For those interested in following Sterner’s play this season, Opening Day for Billings is June 16th.
URI’s official athletic website caught up with Ty Sterner over the weekend and got a few quotes from the recent draftee:
“It goes without saying that having the opportunity to play at the next level is a dream come true,” Sterner said.
“It definitely hasn’t set in yet,” Sterner added. “Eventually it will, but for now its just kind of surreal.”
Good luck to Ty in this next step of his baseball career. Oh, and check out this pic of Sterner officially inking his first professional contract. GO RHODY!
