While we wait to see how the new recruits will play out in the 2014 URI football season, Jim Fleming and his staff are already trying to build the 2015 roster. And while Rhody football recruiting news is a bit sparse on the interwebs, it’s being reported that the Rams have offered 2015 linebacker Andy Davidson (according to 247Sports).
The 6’2″, 210-pound Davidson currently attends Emmaus High School in Emmaus, PA. He also holds offers from Army, Lafayette, and Monmouth… all schools that are reasonably within Rhody’s playing field. Davidson has also unofficially visited UNH… twice. So perhaps they’ve offered as well, although 247 doesn’t list them amongst Davidson’s schools of interest.
As for the player himself, the rising senior plays mostly inside linebacker, although his high school coach has been working him at… fullback? This from The Morning Call:
“We tried working him at tight end, and it didn’t seem like a good fit,” Emmaus coach Randy Cuthbert said. “[Fullback] Tom Bisko was kind of banged up, so we were shuffling people around. We said, ‘Let’s given Andy a try.’
“He’s just a natural. He’s a natural athlete. You can be big and strong, but not everybody can read blocks and make moves going vertical down the field. He’s going to continue to play a bunch of offense.”
As well as Davidson has played at fullback, Emmaus still needs him most on defense. He ranks second on the Green Hornets with 28 tackles. He also has recovered three fumbles and intercepted one pass.
Emmaus also wants Davidson on the field whenever an opposing team kicks or punts. He has already blocked four kicks this season after blocking seven kicks as a sophomore last year.
“It’s not that I really work hard at it; I just try not to take plays off,” Davidson said. “I try to go as hard as I can every play.”
So let’s see… versatility, skills on defense and special teams, and a “non-stop motor”, according to the article. Sounds good – let’s home Fleming can close the deal.
