It took a while, but it looks like some of Rhody’s basketball roster questions are starting to get answered. The status of both Mike Aaman and Mike Powell has been up in the air for some time, but recent reports indicate that both will be transferring out of Rhode Island.
Let’s start with Powell. Back in December it was reported that the then-junior had requested his release from the program with the intent to transfer. But word never came down that the Rams had actually granted his release, and there were even rumors floating that he might play for URI this season.
Not anymore, it seems. According to Scott Phillips of NBC’s College Basketball Talk, Powell was granted his release from the program and will now begin the transfer process. Phillips reported the news via Twitter:
Rhode Island guard Mike Powell has received his release from the school and will look to transfer, per a source.

As for Aaman, he was medically disqualified from playing another game at Rhode Island back in March. But that hasn’t deterred the Jersey native. Aaman is currently playing in a summer league, and he’s doing quite well. But the diagnosis from URI team doctors was pretty definitive, so it appears that Aaman will try to get cleared to play elsewhere. Scott Stump was the first to report that Aaman will transfer after receiving his release:
Raritan grad Mike Aaman is transferring from Rhode Island and got his release today, acc. to coach Denis Caruano.

Josh Newman of SNY.tv is reporting that both LIU and Wagner are possible landing spots for Aaman. As you’ll recall, Aaman initially committed to Wagner when Dan Hurley was there, before following the coach to Kingston.
So it seems like the saga of both Mikes is coming to an end, at least as far as URI fans are concerned. Good luck to both players as they continue to pursue their basketball careers.
