The Rhode Island Rams 2014 football season starts today. OK, well not technically. We’re still four weeks away from the season opener at Marshall. But training camp opens today, and Rhody football will begin practices, workouts, and other preparations as they get to work trying to improve on a 3-9 campaign a year ago. But with new head coach Jim Fleming in place, excitement is starting to build.
There are a few things to keep an eye on over the next four weeks, notably the quarterback position. URI doesn’t have a starter yet, and the competition is wide open. Of course, there was a wrench thrown into the mix on that front this week when red-shirt freshman Luke Casey was suspended indefinitely following an arrest. Casey’s status is unknown at this point, but Bill Koch of the South County Independent is reporting that his suspension will cover at least the first semester.
So that leaves red-shirt junior Kolt Peavey and red-shirt freshman Mack Lowrie left to battle it out as they look to lead the Rhode Island offense this season. Peavey may have the edge due to his experience, but a lot can change in four weeks. Aside from the quarterbacks, there’s undoubtedly other personnel questions that need to be answered. But that’s what training camp is all about, right?
