At long last, the biggest question entering the 2014 Rhode Island football season has been answered. Rhody has reportedly named a starting quarterback for their opening game versus Marshall next weekend. And according to the South County Independent, red-shirt freshman Mack Lowrie has won the job. Bill Koch was the first to report the news via Twitter:

Lowrie is a Fleming recruit, having transferred from Boston College back in February. The Massachusetts native sat out all of last season for the Eagles before coming to Kingston, but he was a highly touted recruit when he selected BC.
As for the Rams, Lowrie seems like the logical choice. Fellow red-shirt freshman Luke Casey seemed like the favorite to earn the nod over the summer, but his arrest and subsequent suspension reshuffled the deck a bit. The starting job was reportedly a two-person race at that point, with Lowrie competing with junior Kolt Peavey.
But the BC transfer won out in the open competition, and he’ll be under center this coming weekend against Marshall. How will he perform? We’re a few days away from finding out. Let us know your thoughts on the QB choice in the comments.
