It took some last-minute heroics, but the Rhode Island Rams baseball team advanced in the A-10 Tournament tonight.
There’s something special going on with URI baseball right now. The Rhode Island Rams picked up a huge walk-off win this evening over the Richmond Spiders as they advanced in the winners bracket of the 2015 Atlantic 10 Championship. Rhody and UR were locked locked in a pitcher’s duel for eight and a half innings. But in the bottom of the ninth… this happened.
URI center fielder Jordan Powell chopped a bases-loaded single up the middle to give the Rams a 2-1 victory in dramatic fashion. Both starters — Steve Moyers for Rhode Island and Dylan Stoops for Richmond — were spectacular, but neither pitcher was involved in the decision. Instead, it was Brad Applin getting the win for Rhody while Ray Harron was the tough-luck loser for the Spiders.
The game also featured an astounding seven-hour rain delay, as the 10:00 a.m. start time was pushed back until 5:00 p.m. But it was worth the wait for the Rams as they snagged their best win of the season… so far.
Rhode Island will be back at it tomorrow evening as they’ll face VCU, who pummeled Saint Louis 14-3 tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
