URI baseball will look to repeat as A-10 Champions in Saint Louis beginning Wednesday. First up for the two seed Rams will be the George Mason Patriots.
With the regular season complete, the Rhode Island Rams will now shift their focus to the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship. And a shot at their second-straight NCAA Tournament berth. Rhody — the two seed — will face the seven seed George Mason Patriots tomorrow in Saint Louis. Here’s one more look at URI’s first round opponent.
Mason finished up their 2017 campaign at 25-31 (13-11), and they were (strangely) much better away from home. GMU was just 9-20 in front of their fans, as opposed to 16-11 at neutral / road sites. The Patriots also went 2-1 against Rhody in a trio of one-run games at Bill Beck Field. Despite that, George Mason needed a win in their final game of the regular season to earn a berth in the tourney.
The probable starters for tomorrow afternoon look like this:
Matt Murphy (URI) vs Tyler Zombro (GMU)
Murphy was Rhody’s workhorse this season, tallying a 5-3 record and a 3.52 ERA in 79.1 innings. He also holds the Rams lone victory over Mason this season, tossing 7.1 innings and allowing just three runs in a 4-3 URI win back on May 12th.
As for Zombro, he racked up a 5-5 record and a 2.71 ERA in 2017. The senior right-hander pitched well in his first meeting with Rhode Island, although he took the loss. Zombro went eight strong innings, allowing four runs while walking none and fanning 11.
Will Rhody be able to defeat him once again in the rematch? First pitch of Rhode Island vs George Mason will come tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. You can follow along with the live stats here.
