Former Rhody standout Xavier Munford is getting another crack at the NBA. The point guard signed with the Milwaukee Bucks earlier this afternoon.
He’s back. After a full season split between the
D- G-League and Europe, former URI Ram Xavier Munford is back in the NBA. The 25 year old New Jersey native inked a free agent contract with the Milwaukee Bucks today, and he’ll now try to earn a roster spot before the season opens later this month.
The last time we saw X in the NBA, he was playing for the Memphis Grizzlies back in the 2015-16 season. Munford played in 14 games for the Grizz that season, averaging 5.7 points, 2.2 boards, and 1.6 assists in 17 and a half minutes per game. The point guard also drained 39.1 percent of his threes, so he’s still the shooting threat that Rhode Island fans remember.
More recently, Munford was on the gold medal winning 2017 USA AmeriCup Team that took home a gold medal earlier this summer. Kendall Marshall, his teammate in those games, is also on the Bucks preseason roster. One guy that’s not in Milwaukee is James Young. He was recently waived, which opened the door for X. He’ll be competing with the likes of Gerald Green, Kendall Marshall, and Gary Payton II for an opening day spot.
There are a few other interesting storylines in play. First, the Bucks next preseason game is tomorrow night against the Chicago Bulls. It may be too early for X to suit up for that one, but if he does, he could potentially play head-to-head versus former PC star Kris Dunn. Secondly, Milwaukee opens their season in Boston against the Celtics. So were Munford to make the roster, URI fans could make the short trip to see him live on Opening Night.
Let’s hope that’s a possibility. Good luck to X as he tries to land another NBA roster spot!
