The 2018 NBA Draft is still a month and a half away, but E.C. Matthews is already getting looks. He worked out for the New York Knicks yesterday.
It’s still setting in that E.C. Matthews won’t be on the floor with the Rhode Island Rams next season. But hopefully that doesn’t mean Rhody fans won’t be able to watch him. The former URI guard worked out with the New York Knicks yesterday, per the official men’s basketball Instagram account. Matthews also teased the news in his Instagram story, posting a pic of a Knicks t-shirt.
This shouldn’t come as a huge shocker. E.C. has been getting NBA buzz since before he even played a game for Rhode Island. And while that has died down a bit since (his knee injury didn’t help matters), Matthews still has the tools to play at the next level. He averaged 14.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in his URI career. And at 6’5″, he certainly has the build of NBA guards.
That said, it’s highly unlikely that E.C. gets drafted. The NBA Draft is stacked with young guys, most of whom are a lot rawer than Matthews. Teams are drafting largely on potential. E.C. isn’t appearing in any mock drafts right now. But that doesn’t mean much; Xavier Munford didn’t get drafted either. It’s still likely that Matthews will land in the Summer League, with the goal of an undrafted free agent contract.
Yesterday’s workout was likely the first of many for E.C. as the NBA playoffs are still in full swing. The 2018 NBA Draft will take place on June 21st.
