Rhode Island basketball will complete the Ocean State trifecta in 2018-19. The Rams have added the Bryant Bulldogs to their home slate, per a report.
Following the news that Alabama won’t be coming to the Ryan Center this season, some more URI schedule news dropped today. Rhody will welcome the Bryant Bulldogs to Kingston this season as they two will square off in the season opener. Breaking news guru Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports was the first to report the game, via Twitter.

Bryant certainly doesn’t carry the same kind of name recognition as ‘Bama, but there are a few storylines here. For one, a game against the Bulldogs means that URI will play all three Rhode Island basketball D-I schools in 2018-19. Their usual games against Brown (home) and Providence (road) are already on the books. Secondly, the news also sets a date for the season opener: Tuesday, November 6th. And lastly, this gives fans that were looking for a possible Bryant match-up their wish.
All that said, the appropriate response when looking at last year’s Bryant team is: “Yeesh”. The Bulldogs finished with a brutal 3-28 (2-16) record, with their only non-conference win coming against Hartford. Not surprisingly, that abysmal record sparked some change. Long-time head coach Tim O’Shea announced his retirement as former Iona assistant Jared Grasso took over at the helm. Additionally, Phil Martelli, Jr. (yep) was hired as an assistant.
So… bring ’em on. Rhody will try for full Ocean State dominance this coming season.
